The Board had a very productive little morning conference call today. We will be starting a super 50/50 which will have a drawing at SLAM in May – tickets should be ready this week and available for sale starting next week. We will be asking everyone to sell super 50/50 tickets as best they can as we will be using the monies from this fundraiser to prep for summer band camp activities.

I will be meeting with a select group of parents this week in order to begin organizing parent committees and volunteers. I selected a small group of people who I know have experience and whom I’ve worked with (or marched with!) before – but I did not intend to keep parents out of this group! Not all all! We’re just starting with a small group and then growing it from there. We will have opportunities for everyone to help out – there will be several committees and I will be reaching out to more parents to help plan.

Our first initial meeting will be this week – thursday afternoon (time still TBC!)- we’ll post the minutes to that meeting here and let everyone know what our next steps will be by the beginning of next week. Thank you for all of your interest in helping out the band!

Just to clarify – the BHS Band Foundation board is in charge of the legal and official 501(c)3 portion of our organization. Their main task is to raise money and organize those big tasks, take care of all of the legal documents and any permits we might need, and to take care of all of the paperwork for our taxes at the end of the year.

Parents will be getting involved to help work hands on with the events and projects we run that their students are directly related to which will include – Concerts, Parades, Football Games, Band Competitions, Band Camp, the Summer Family Night Out (New this year!) and for the first time in many years – the band own Marching Band competition to be held October 2013.

You should also be aware that the Band Foundation will be broadening it’s reach as elementary school directors and parents get involved and start working and using the resources the foundation provides for their own fund raisers. Our goal is to support instrumental music throughout our city – not just the high school band.

Why are we doing this? Well our BIGGEST asset and most IMPORTANT source of future success at the high school are the the students and parents that are involved in the elementary music programs throughout the city. The board will be working with elementary school directors and we’ll be organizing parent committees for each school with the help of the elementary directors.

If any parents or students – or staff – have any questions please add your comments below, as many others may have the same questions!
